“I got five cents five, five, five, do I hear ten? Ten to the lady, in the front, ten, ten, ten, do I hear more? Twenty five, fifty, fifty cents, do I hear seventy five? Anyone for seventy five cents?” This is how the private and illegal underground auction bidding goes for gas that is sneaked in from other countries. This secretive auctioning happens once a month in different group members of the Pass on Gas Committee’s basements. It is dangerous and risky. The last person who was caught was sentenced to buying gas at full price for three whole months. His financial status sank, he was unable to buy a loaf of bread for his family, but mostly was looked down upon by the rest of the community. It wasn’t the fact that he was participating in the underground distribution of gas but rather, the fact that he was caught. Now, the government knows they’re out there. Those who are willing to fight back against authority to find gas in any way they can. Since gas prices have risen to an outrageous price, crime and prostitution rates have risen. Just yesterday there were sixty nine men arrested for prostituting themselves out on local street corners. When asked what he was turning tricks for, he said, “I gotta find some way to fill up my Ford F150. I can’t afford this diesel anymore and hunting season is just around the corner. How are men expected to do those things that guys need to do with their big trucks if they can’t even fill them up with gas?” Car dealerships have almost completely gone out of business. With gas prices so high, let’s just say that no one is in the car buying market. People are practically trying to give their cars away. There are cars for sale everywhere you look. New Ferraris are selling for one grand. Normally it would be any car fanatics dream but with gas prices so high no one bothers buying cars at all, much less nice ones. It seems like there is no escaping the familiar story of the high costs. Everyone is talking about it and it seems like that’s all they’re talking about. The movie Zoolander has become rated NC17 because of the offensive gas scene. This movie received its outrageous rating because of its famous scene at the gas station. In the scene, four men are smoking cigarettes while a gasoline fight breaks out. One might think that this scene was banned because it is so dangerous and stupid but, instead, the scene was banned because of the total waist of gas. Then there are those who truly believe the government is listening to them. Ha, what a joke. These foolish people believe that things like boycotting gas will make the government listen to them. Sure, it may make them listen for a little while, but we all know the prices will shoot up right in the middle of this so called “relief.” The moped has become the new way of traveling. The people of the United States thought they had a way of getting around the government and the high gas prices. For a little while, their plan was working. To try to fight back, the government decided to raise the gas prices to try to get the most for their money since people were now able to fill up on a gallon on gas. However, in the winter, especially cases in northern states such as Michigan, there were reportedly two hundred deaths from people freezing to death from being on their mopeds in the winter. Police would literally have to peal people off of their mopeds who froze to death while waiting at a stop light. The government actually felt bad so they decided to lower the gas prices in the winter. While this convinced some people to start driving again, it didn’t fool all of them. Soon enough hate crimes began to arise which meant more violence over the gas prices that the government had to deal with. The crimes weren’t in the usual norm of hate crimes they weren’t targeted against a specific race of type of people but against those who tried to fill up at the gas station. They actually became quite violent. Millions were hospitalized and other people, old people, women, and children began to stand outside gas stations holding signs and singing chants about lower gas prices. During, the 2008 presidential election, Senator Barak Obama and John McCain tried their hardest to lower the gas prices because it was getting so expensive while they were campaigning. As they tried to persuade the states to drop their prices, they tried to deny what they were doing. However, if people paid close enough attention, a sudden drop in gas prices could be seen wherever Senator Obama or McCain were. President George Bush came up with a “bright idea.” This bright idea was to convince the rest of the government to give free gas to everyone. In addition to gaining the approval of the citizens of the United States, he was tired of not being able to fly down to Texas whenever he wanted, or take his leisurely trips in his hummer limo. Now, no one will have to pay for gas. The rest of the government tried to talk him out of this idea. Even the Vice President said it was a bad idea. Nevertheless, he is the president and it seems he finally realized how much the citizens of the United States hate him. Now, instead of sending out jury duty notices, people received free gas notices. On top of that, gas was now used as in incentive to do things. For example, when people registered to vote, paid their taxes three months in advanced, and enlisted in the army, free gas was given to them and their family. Surprisingly this worked amazingly well. This is where George Bush’s plan came to an end. Soon, the United States began to run out of gas. They tried to borrow from other countries but they too were soon unwilling to offer their help because without charging for gas, the United States had run out of money. Now, George Bush was right back where he started and worst of all he couldn’t take rides in his limo. His next plan was siphoning. This is the process of draining gas out of a gas tank through a straw by means of sucking it through your mouth. Who would have thought that George Bush would have to result to this? Now, everyday somewhere in the middle of his morning run he has to find a car full of gas to siphon. This is a hard task for the President of the United States to do without being seen or caught. Sadly, his body guards knew what he was up to. However, being the loyal guards they are, they turn a blind eye to the deceitful misconduct he performs every day. As good at sucking up that gasoline as he is, he can only get enough to provide for himself. Now, another problem has arisen. Once again, George Bush has let down the people of his country. There is almost no more gas to be found. The President of the United States has started going into the slums and ghetto to find any spare amount of gas he can. Not only does he now have to be careful of getting caught he now has to be careful of being shot. He hasn’t exactly been siphoning in the friendliest parts of the area. His stress level was at a new peak, even for the President of the United States. He was almost running out of places to turn to. With one last spot in mind, he went to his final destination. This was the head office of the Democratic Party. If caught there, he was in for it in more ways than one. He soon came upon Barak Obama’s black Audi A4. Without delay he started his siphoning. Bush usually had his body guards with to keep watch but this time he came alone. It was a difficult task to suck gas through a straw while simultaneously keeping watch. This was especially challenging for George W. In the few seconds that he took his eyes off of the straw the gas had reached the top. I guess those Eyes of Texas weren’t upon him at that time. The next thing he knew he was swallowing the gas. He could feel his eyes begin to bug out of his head. He didn’t know what was going to happen. The next thing he knew he was on all fours. There was an intense burning feeling in his throat and his stomach. Now he was throwing up everywhere. The next thing he knew the world became cloudy and closed in on him as he passed out. He awoke to Barak Obama. He was standing there shaking his hand in his hospital bed saying, “Thanks George, for giving up the rest of your term in office. Now that I am president there will be change for America. This change will first start with no more siphoning!” (Cheers and applause in the background and everyone lived happily ever after! Go Obama!)

I would tell about how people are waiting for it to go up and betting about when it does. I might make up something to try to be funny about how people are selling their cars because there is no need for them since nobody can afford gas. I would maybe talk about a man selling is body like prostitution for a tank of gas. I might mention the famous scene from Zoolander where they are having a gasoline price and when people watch it, they won’t be sad that the people died they will just talk about how much gas they wasted. I want to talk about people who fall for the trick and start to buy gas when the prices go down. They are the people who think the government is listening to them about gas prices. I might add something about when people rob gas stations they don’t want money or anything like that; they just want a full tank of gas. I will talk about how gas is used as an incentive to Americans. For example the news could say if you get out in vote we’re guaranteeing a full tank of gas. I could talk about how people are now always late everywhere they go because they don’t drive cars anymore. In the winter time nobody goes anywhere because it’s too cold and in the summer it is too hot.

This topic needs to be addressed because I feel it is a serious and unfair battle that Americans face. It seems that we can only do so much. After we have tried so many things I think all we can do is laugh about it and this is where a satire comes in and seems fitting.

In the conclusion I will tell how the government is overthrown and there is free gas for everyone and everyone lives happily ever after. I think this is fitting because in all American fairy tales there is a happily ever after.

I struggled a lot on an idea and I could really use some advice so if you have any please let me know because I’m still not sure if I understand the idea completely.

In the short story by Kurt Vonnegut, the understanding was very clear. It was obvious that the story was about equality for everyone. Usually; now, when we hear the words equality for everyone, we think of equality between race, religion, and sex. However, I’m sure many of us never imagined fighting for equality in looks, intelligence, and ability. I found it ironic that even though people had handicaps, everyone knew they worse the handicap, the “better” the person was. The ending was made humorous by ending in the same way the story began. In the beginning the woman was crying and the man was asking what was wrong and in the end, the same thing was happening. It shows that in the way of life they were taught to live, everything should be perfect and happy. If something is sad, it should be forgotten. In a way, this reminded me of how I perceive the fifties and sixties. The women did all the work, the men made the money, and when they got home there was always a warm apple pie and everything was perfect. However, I feel like now that the years have progressed that there is more equality in terms of sex that the story didn’t fit the “perfect” white picket fence, cookie cutter house, two and a half kids, with a puppy wagging its tail and everyone smiling. I did feel that the story showed how many times people in our world try to ignore problems. If something is wrong, broken, or not the way it should be, it is swept under the rug and forgotten about. I feel that this story his calling Americans out on their bluff. We are not and never will be perfect and instead of trying to forget that or hide it, we should accept it!

The biggest difference between the story and the movie is that in the story, everyone goes about their day and finds bliss in not knowing the whole truth. Obviously the woman is crying. She must know that something made her cry, and the man must know too. Nevertheless, they don’t try to understand what made them sad, they just know from past experience that they will forget and go on with their lives. The main theme is not questioning the authority. I felt it was an excellent time to read this story because what is currently happening in our world. I feel that in this next presidential election that’s approaching, we have a chance to not only question our authority, but actually make a change in it. We could do this by electing Senator Barack Obama to become the next president of the United States. We have never had a president like him, and this is our chance to turn our country around. I found that issue very relatable to both the story and the movie. In the movie, people begin to see that something isn’t right. Watching the ending made it fit perfectly together for me. If Harrison really wanted to prove his point and find a way to help the people in his world, he did the best thing possible. He connected the truth with the only way he could. Without knowing what happened in those people’s future, I can hope that they aren’t like the people in the story. I hope that they start to question what is out there and question the way they are being controlled.

I feel like the storyline was changed to present a happier ending and hopefully outcome. Even though Harrison was forced to lose his life, I feel like the people in the movie have more of a chance to become who they really are. I did like how they kept the overall theme and target of the message the same. Both the story and movie used humor to try to get their point across and I feel like it helped the storyline. I felt both forms were effect for different reasons. The story was effective because it was short and got right to the point. The ending was really the thing that stuck out in my mind. However, the movie was almost equally effective in the fact that you can see emotions, and was able to get more background information. I liked this assignment and it really made me think about things that I didn’t think it would. It taught me to accept our problems, question our authority, and be thankful for the differences we all possess.

Looking at these websites gave me an idea about all of them. Most of them I had never heard of or used before, so it opened my eyes to what is out there in the music world. Personally I have never used Pandora before. However it seems like a great site that is very informative. I like how it has the about music column that gives you background information about your favorite artist or group. It also tells what album a particular song is on. It tells about the specific song, they way it is sung, and helps you meet other people who are fans of the same music. It seems like a good way to learn about other music you may also enjoy.

I had never heard of or used the Last fm but I got the impression that it is like a personalized You-tube. I like how it has the ability to show music, movies, charts, and events.

I am familiar with itunes and have used it before. It is a great way to get songs you like for cheap. I like the feature that enables you to create different play lists. I like that it is easy to burn discs from. I think a cool feature to add would be showing the videos that went along with the song.

Judging by Arcade Fire’s website, it seems to be targeted towards a certain group of people and a particular kind and style of music. It seems confusing to use by the way one has to move the mouse around to see if something lights up. However, at the same time, it seems informative but it seems like it wouldn’t be the best site to use unless you already had heard of the band or group before. This site, compared to the others seems less user friendly and less able to give you the opportunity to branch out and find newer types of music. It seems to limit you to the ones you already know.

Rosetta seems even more confusing. I wouldn’t go to it because it seems hard to use. The best thing about this site is that it seems to be a good way for a new group to advertise and get itself out there.

Charlie Don’t Shake- seems like a better organized way to advertise for one particular band. The last two sites have seemed more about advertising a particular band rather than listening to all different types of music, so it really depends what a person is looking for when they are visiting these sites.

Last but not least, flatfoot seems very unprofessional and laid back. The good thing about it being laid back is that the context is easy to understand. It seems like a good way to find information but I would question the information from this sight because it doesn’t look credible. To make it have a better feeling, I would suggest that they do a better job presenting their website and try to make it more professional and easy to use.

Everywhere we go and every place we look we see a cell phone. They appear everywhere in our world and if I didn’t know better I would say they are taking over. This morning on my bike ride to class, I dodged people talking on them. It doesn’t seem to matter if they are walking or biking, almost everyone is talking or texting. This is what our world has become. When I think about my lifetime and how I first learned about cell phones, it was from my parents, specifically my dad. My dad is a physician so it is understandable that he always carries the device on him. I can remember begging my parents to get me one. The idea of them seemed so cool and grown up, I couldn’t wait for my time to come. When it finally did, it was great, everything I could have hoped for. Now, I could call my friends from anywhere I wanted and at whatever time I wanted. Oh wait, I wasn’t allowed to go anywhere I wanted, and yes, my parents took away my phone at 9:00p.m. Okay, so not necessarily an anywhere anytime kind of thing…yet. I still had hope for the years to come. So for now, I could call my friends if I was outside of my house! I couldn’t believe it. Since I never really needed to make a call and I wasn’t supposed to use my cell phone except for emergencies, I didn’t really get the chance too often. But, it was okay, I know how cool I looked when I could whip my cell out of my pocket and pretend to be doing something ridiculously important on it. That was all that mattered, that appearance. If one thinks about it, that must be a big part of what cell phone companies are after. If we think back to the first invention of a cell phone they did not flip open, slide up, have a touch screen, or a keyboard, they couldn’t play music, they couldn’t take pictures; they could call. Since then, the gadgets we have all become dependent on can do those things and more. In addition to that, think of their design. They come in different shapes, sizes, and colors; oh my! When we think about it, why is all of that necessary to make a call? It’s not. This is why I am convinced that this is not the only reason people own cell phones. It can almost be seen as a status symbol. How superficial is that? Extremely; but, sadly, this is a big part of our world today and those cell phone manufacturers know it. They get us right where they want us, feeding out of the palms of their hands waiting for what new feature and cool name the next cell phone will have. That is how the cycle seems to revolve, they invent it, and we buy it.

The device is black with silver accents. It is nine inches long and five inches wide. It is an inch to two inches in width. The entire piece is made of metal. On the back there are the letters ‘LG’ with a winking face. There is also a silver rectangle on the back with a circle like eye in the middle. On the sides of the device, there are buttons and cutouts. The front has a shiny almost glossy surface. Again, it has the LG symbol and the word ‘alltel’ written on the front cover. In its resting position the screen does not illuminate and it is almost possible to see a fuzzy reflection of oneself. However, once the front screen is slid upward, the entire front surface lights up. There are several different pictures on the screen that seem to change in random order. If one was to touch the screen it displays the time and several icons. If the screen is touched the entire device vibrates. Once the screen is slid upward, there are numbers zero to nine with letters ‘a’ through ‘z’ on each button. There are three letters on each button. One button says ‘talk’ in green and another ‘end’ in red. When I feel the buttons they are smooth and slightly raised in a distinct sort of wave pattern. If I push the button, it makes a barely audible clicking sound. If one looks closely, it is possible to see fingerprints and smudges on the screen. When turned on, the buttons light up. If a call is received, the device either makes a noise like a song or vibrates. Once a call has ended, the screen will stay lit for thirty seconds and then turn dark and black again. It feels cold to the touch and has a hard surface. It contains no distinct smells or taste.

That silver rectangle on the back of the device that contains an eye like circle is actually a camera. This within itself says something about cell phone owners, manufacturers, and our society. This new addition to current cell phones means that people who possess cell phones take pictures. However, why do people take pictures? What is the purpose? People didn’t have cameras millions of years ago and managed to survive. As time has gone on, people in our world like to record special events that happen so we don’t have to rely solely on our memory. With this technology available to us, there is no reason that we shouldn’t take pictures. Pictures can symbolize and represent so many different things in life. Looking at pictures has become such a special part of our society that we have scrap books, picture albums, and even special websites devoted to showing our pictures. On top of just a regular camera, the thing that makes it more distinguished and relatable to this concept is that fact that there are digital cameras like the ones in our phones. This can be interoperated that people of our world like instant gratification. Now, there is no more driving to the store, filling out order forms, and waiting until they develop it. The theme in the cell phone and the camera is its simplicity. They are here to make our life easier. Who wouldn’t be addicted to that?

The original cell phone was an extremely large device that people carried around in their car. Normally, only the rich would own them. However, over the years, the cell phone itself and the people who own them have changed in several ways. When first invented, the cell phone carried out a very practical purpose. It possessed such a great idea. This great idea was the ability to make a call from anywhere. So many times people need to make an important call when they are not in their home. This is very true in the case of emergencies. Needless to say, in order to make that call, it is unnecessary to have other features on the phone. However, everyday, technology becomes more advanced and more amazing. As time went on, the cell phone became smaller and smaller. Not only that, it became more socially acceptable and understood that many different types of people would carry them. This led the advertising away from strictly focusing on the rich. Originally, it did not flip up, slide, or even twist and turn. But today, cell phones can do almost more maneuvers than I’m sure some ever thought possible. This fact indicates how cell phone companies are trying to promote themselves and who they are targeting. Their design alone makes them more easy and discrete to use. My dad once told me a story of when he was in the heart of Detroit on the side of the road because his car had broken down. He was going through medical school and had just purchased his first cell phone. The phone was so large that it took up his entire brief case. Since he was stranded on the side of the road, he dialed the number he needed and put the phone back in his brief case. He held the brief case up in the air, near his ear and started explaining the situation to whomever he had called for help. I wasn’t there so I don’t know the exact conversation but I do know that it was something like, “I’m stranded in Detroit and I’m talking into my brief case, help me.” This instance helped me understand the situation. My dad was certainly not “rich” but he did possess a cell phone and he knew how he could be perceived. Now if someone was stranded on the side of the road, no matter where they were, we would expect to see them on a cell phone. This shows how accustomed our society has become to them and how we almost could not function without them. Now, their small design, their capability to flip open, and the function that can turn them from loud to vibrate makes them much more user friendly. Now, anytime a person walks into a classroom they see kids hiding the phone under their desk to send text messages. This design expands its target audience and promotes their use to everyone.

We have seen how cell phones have progressed over the years. The convenience they provide us makes us all the more dependent on them. Their capability to take pictures, flip, slide, their size, shape, and new colors are all things that promote its use to different parts of the population. Not only to more of the population, but different kinds of people of all ages. For instance, now that cell phones come in bright colors, have cameras, and features such as touch screens, this opens its user audience to a younger crowd. Kids are starting to have cell phones at younger and younger ages. Toy companies even make toy cell phones. In our world, five year olds know what a cell phone is and possibly how to use it. On the news, I saw a story about a woman who taught her daughter a song teaching her how to use a cell phone in case of emergency. The song went “911 green, 911 green, 911 green.” This idea actually worked! As helpful as these devices can be, we need to remember that all of the new high tech features are not necessary to simply make a phone call. It is scary that many of us would not even know what to do and how to carry on our lives without them. To have any kind of hope for the future, the first step, like any addiction is admitting that our society has a problem. In the past five years we have developed so much new technology; it is crazy to think about what we will have in the next five years, or when we have kids. Do we really want our children to be as addicted to these devices like we are already? I hope not. The next time we go to take out our cell phone, we should really ask ourselves, ‘is it necessary?’ We use these things because we can and because they are available to us. Perhaps we should stop thinking that way and utilize all of our options. I’m not saying it won’t be hard. The manufacturers and advertisers know how to keep us wanting more. Next time a new feature or phone comes out, think of how much money we can save ourselves. If we don’t, cell phones really will be taking over.

Everywhere you go and every place you look you see a cell phone. They appear everywhere in our world and if I didn’t know better I would say they are taking over. This morning on my bike ride to class, I had to doge people talking on them. It doesn’t seem to matter if they are walking or biking, almost everyone you see is talking or texting. Since then, the gadgets we all have come dependent on can do those things and more. In addition to that, think of their design. They come in different shapes, sizes, and colors; oh my! When we think about it, why is all of that necessary to make a call? It’s not. This is why I am convinced and know that this is not the only reason people own cell phones.

There is also a silver rectangle on the back. There are several different pictures on the screen and seem to change in a random order.

The original cell phone was an extremely large device that people carried around in their car. In most cases, only the rich would own them. Over the years, it has progressed in many ways. Originally, it did not flip up or slide, or even twist and turn. But today, cell phones can do almost more maneuvers than I’m sure some ever thought possible. This fact indicates how cell phone companies are trying to promote themselves and who they are targeting. Simply their design alone makes them more easy and discrete to use. My dad once told me a story of when he was in the heart of Detroit on the side of the road because his car had broken down. He was going through medical school and had just purchased his first cell phone. The phone was so large that it took up his entire brief case. Since he was stranded on the side of the road, he dialed the number he needed and put it back into his brief case. He held the brief case up in the air, near his ear and started explaining the situation to whomever he had called for help. I wasn’t there so I don’t know the exact conversation but I do know that it was something like, “I’m stranded in Detroit and I’m talking into my brief case, help me.” This instance for me is a good way to help understand the situation. My dad was certainly not “rich” but he did possess a cell phone and he knew how he could be perceived. Now if someone was stranded on the side of the road, no matter where they were, we would expect to see them on a cell phone. In this way, it shows how accustomed our society has become to them and how we almost could not function without them. Now, their small design, their capability to flip open, and the function that can turn them from loud to vibrate makes them much more user friendly. Now, anytime a person walks into a classroom they see kids hiding the phone under their desk to send text messages. This design expands its target audience and promotes the use to everyone.

That silver rectangle on the back of the device is actually a camera. With the technology available to us, there is no reason that we shouldn’t take pictures. Now, there is no more waiting to go to the store, take in the film, and wait until they develop it. The theme in the cell phone and the camera is its simplicity. They are there to make our life easier. Who wouldn’t be addicted to that?

Do we really want our children to be as addicted to these devices as we are already?

They are everywhere in our and if I didn’t know better I’d say they were taking over. This morning on my bike to class I had to doge people talking on them. It doesn’t seem to matter if they are walking or biking, almost everyone you see is talking or texting. This is what our world has become. When I think about my life time and how I first learned about cell phones they were from my parents, specifically my dad. My dad is a physician so it was understandable that he would always have the device on him. I can remember begging my parents for one. The idea of them seemed so cool and grown up I couldn’t wait for my time to come. When it finally did, it was great, everything I could have hoped for. Now, I could call my friends from from anywhere i wanted and whatever time I wanted. Oh wait, I wasn’t allowed to go anywhere I wanted, and yes, my parents took away my phone at 9:00p.m. Ok so not necessarly an anywhere anytime kind of thing…yet. I still had my hope for the years to come. So for now, I could call my friends if I was outside of my house! I couldn’t believe it. Since I never really needed to make a call and I wasn’t supposed to use my cell phone except for emergencies, I didn’t really get the chance too often. But, it was ok, I know how cool I looked when I could whip my cell out of my pocket and pretend to be doing somthing redicioulsly important on it. That was all that mattered, that appereance. If one thinks about it, that must be a big part of what cell phone companies are after. If we think back to the first invention of a cell phone they did not flip open, slide up, have a touch screen, or a keyboard, they couldn’t play music, they couldn’t take pictures, they could call. Since then the gadgets we all have come dependent on can do those things and more. In addition to that, think of they’re design. They come in different shapes, sizes, and colors! When we think about it, why is all of that necessary to make a call? It’s not. This is why I am convinced that and know for a fact that this is not the only reason people have cell phones. If you think about it, it can almost be seen as a status symbol.

It is an inch to to inches in width. The entire piece is made of metal. On the back there are the words LG with a winking face. There is also a silver rectangle on the back. On the sides of the device, there are buttons and cuttouts. The front has a shiney almost glossy surface. Again, it has the LG symbol and the word alltel written on the front cover. In it’s resting position the screen does not illuminate and is almost possible to see a fuzzy reflection of oneself. However, once the front screen is slid upward, the entire front surface lights up. There are several different pictures on the screen and seem to change in a random order. If one was to touch the screen it displays the time and several icons. If the screen is touched the entire device viborates. Once the screen is slid upward, there are numbers zero to nine with letters a to z on each button. There are three letters on each button. One button says ‘talk’ in green and ‘end’ in red. When I feel the buttons they are smooth and slightly raised in a distinct sort of wave pattern. If one looks closely, it is possible to see fingerprints and smudges on the screen. When on, the button light up. If a call is recieved, the device either makes a noise like a song or viborates. It feels cold to the touch and has a hard surface. It contains no distict smells or taste.

The original cell phone I believe was an extremely large device that people would carry around in their car. In most cases, only the rich would own them. Over the years, it has progressed in many ways. When first invented, the cell phone carried out a very practical purpose. It possessed such a great idea. So many times people need to make an important call when they are not in their home. This is very true in the case of emegrencies. Needless to say, in order to make that call, it was unnessary to have other features on the phone. However, everyday, technology becoms more advanced and more amazing. As time went on, the cell phone became smaller and smaller. Not only that, it became more socially exceptable and understood that many different types of people would carry them. This led the advertising away from stricktly focusing on the rich. Originally it did not flip up or slide, or even twist and turn. But now today, cell phones can do almost more manuvers than I’m sure some ever thought possible. This fact indicates how cell phone companies are trying to promote themselves and who they are targeting. Simply their design alone lets them be more easy and descreate to use. My dad once told me a story of when he was in the heart of Detroit on the side of the road becauase his car broke down. He was going through medical school and had just purchased his first cell phone. The phone was so large that it took up his entire brief case. Since he was stranded on the side of the road the dialed the number he needed and put it back into his brief case. He held the brief case up in his hand and started explaining his situation to whomever he had called for help. I wasn’t there so I don’t know the exact conversation but I do know that it was something like, “I’m stranded in Detroit and I’m talking into my brief case, help me.” This instance for me is a good way to help understand the situation. My dad was certainly not “rich” at the time but he did possess a cell phone and he knew how he could be percieved. Now if someone was stranded on the side of the road no matter where they were we would expect to see them on a cell phone. In this way, it shows how accostumed our society has become to them and how we almost could not function without them. Now, their small design, their capability to flip open, and the function that can turn them from loud to viborate makes them much more user friendly. Now, anytime a person walks into a class room they see kids hiding the phone under their desk to send text messages. This design expands it’s target audience and promotes the use to everyone.

Not only has the general manufacture of the size and shape changed, but they also come in different colors. This again indicates that the cell phone is being advertized to more of the population. Not only to more of the population, but different types and ages of population. For instance, now that cell phones come in bright colors, have cameras, and features such as touch screens, this opens it’s user audience to a younger crowd. Now kids are starting to have cell phones at younger and younger ages. They even make toy cell phones. In our world, even five year olds know what a cell phone is and possibly how to use it. On the news, I saw a story of a woman who taught her daughter a song teaching her how to use a cell phone in case of emergency. The song went “911 green, 911 green, 911 green.” This idea actually worked, so at the same time it can’t be argued that cell phones are a bad thing, especially when they are known how to be used and can help in a time of need.
