Movie vs. Story

November 2, 2008 rzeppa13

In the short story by Kurt Vonnegut, the understanding was very clear.  It was obvious that the story was about equality for everyone.  Usually; now, when we hear the words equality for everyone, we think of equality between race, religion, and sex.  However, I’m sure many of us never imagined fighting for equality in looks, intelligence, and ability.  I found it ironic that even though people had handicaps, everyone knew they worse the handicap, the “better” the person was.  The ending was made humorous by ending in the same way the story began.  In the beginning the woman was crying and the man was asking what was wrong and in the end, the same thing was happening.  It shows that in the way of life they were taught to live, everything should be perfect and happy.  If something is sad, it should be forgotten.  In a way, this reminded me of how I perceive the fifties and sixties.  The women did all the work, the men made the money, and when they got home there was always a warm apple pie and everything was perfect.  However, I feel like now that the years have progressed that there is more equality in terms of sex that the story didn’t fit the “perfect” white picket fence, cookie cutter house, two and a half kids, with a puppy wagging its tail and everyone smiling.  I did feel that the story showed how many times people in our world try to ignore problems.  If something is wrong, broken, or not the way it should be, it is swept under the rug and forgotten about.  I feel that this story his calling Americans out on their bluff.  We are not and never will be perfect and instead of trying to forget that or hide it, we should accept it!

The biggest difference between the story and the movie is that in the story, everyone goes about their day and finds bliss in not knowing the whole truth.  Obviously the woman is crying.  She must know that something made her cry, and the man must know too.  Nevertheless, they don’t try to understand what made them sad, they just know from past experience that they will forget and go on with their lives. The main theme is not questioning the authority.  I felt it was an excellent time to read this story because what is currently happening in our world.  I feel that in this next presidential election that’s approaching, we have a chance to not only question our authority, but actually make a change in it.  We could do this by electing Senator Barack Obama to become the next president of the United States.  We have never had a president like him, and this is our chance to turn our country around.  I found that issue very relatable to both the story and the movie.  In the movie, people begin to see that something isn’t right.  Watching the ending made it fit perfectly together for me.  If Harrison really wanted to prove his point and find a way to help the people in his world, he did the best thing possible.  He connected the truth with the only way he could.  Without knowing what happened in those people’s future, I can hope that they aren’t like the people in the story.  I hope that they start to question what is out there and question the way they are being controlled.

I feel like the storyline was changed to present a happier ending and hopefully outcome.  Even though Harrison was forced to lose his life, I feel like the people in the movie have more of a chance to become who they really are.  I did like how they kept the overall theme and target of the message the same.  Both the story and movie used humor to try to get their point across and I feel like it helped the storyline.  I felt both forms were effect for different reasons.  The story was effective because it was short and got right to the point.  The ending was really the thing that stuck out in my mind.  However, the movie was almost equally effective in the fact that you can see emotions, and was able to get more background information.  I liked this assignment and it really made me think about things that I didn’t think it would.  It taught me to accept our problems, question our authority, and be thankful for the differences we all possess.

Hey Laine! I just finished reading your blog post, and I enjoyed it very much. ☺ First off, I really noticed a lot of grammatical errors, along with a few spelling errors here and there. Really be sure to re- read your work, and be careful of the tense of it as well. I thought that it was very interesting how your related the movie to the 50s and 60s, as well as the Presidential election. At first I was like, hmmm how are they alike haha but you explained yourself and supported it with enough evidence to make it a good, clear, analogy.
“I felt both forms were effect for different reasons. The story was effective because it was short and got right to the point.” I felt that you explained yourself as to why only the short story was different and not the movie. The next sentence then went into the ending and I wasn’t too sure if that was your explanation as to why the movie form was different.
Over all, it was an easy read and very well written. Some things that you should work on for the next paper include
    1) Grammar and spelling.. it can really make or break a paper
    2) I felt sometimes that you would have a really good idea, and explain it only 50% and not 100%. Make sure to really elaborate on your thoughts and fully explain them.
I’m short by 10 words so I’m just going to say I love you and so glad that I’ve gotten to know you ☺

Ps… hope studying for iss goes well tonight haha
